DJI Osmo Mobile 2 Stabilizer

This review is kind of over due, but this device is amazing.  I still remember the first time by buddy Eugene showed me his Osmo Mobile 2, I thought to myself that's a fancy selfie-stick.  I can't believe how wrong I was about it.  Until I used one of these, I had no idea what a stabilizer was.  As I started to take more video clips, I started to see how poorly my videos would come out, and wonder how other people's videos came out so well.  At first I thought others had better equipment, but even with a DSLR or a Go Pro, my videos did not come out the way I wanted them to.  I knew I had to figure something out when I saw a particular video of someone who recorded them self, and still it came out smoother than my videos of other people.

For those of you who don't know what a stabilizer or a gimbal does, it basically "Stabilizes" your movements when you are shooting a video, so that your videos will come out smooth.  Of course nowadays, there are more options with the different brands of stabilizers, but that is the main function of a stabilizer.  My favorite feature of the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is the Active Track.  Basically you can target a person, and the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 will follow stay locked on that person and follow them around for smooth video.  You can use the Active Track feature on the regular camera, or on the small camera of your phone if you are recording yourself.  Here is a short clip below take with my Galaxy S9 and the DJI Osmo Mobile 2.

The DJI Osmo Mobile 2 comes in a pretty nice case, and is fairly easy to setup.  Depending on your device, you go to the App Store or the Play Store and download the DJI Go app.  After you download the app, connect your phone to your Osmo via bluetooth, and you are good to go.

When you are not recording a particular person, you can just press record and just point your Osmo wherever you want to record.  Once you point your device somewhere else, the stabilizer will slowly follow you to your target.  This makes for your smooth and professional looking videos.  Without a stabilizer or gimbal, you will have sudden movements which make your videos really choppy.  The Osmo Mobile 2 also keeps your shot level.  Here is an example below where I do a walk through of the Wynn hotel with the Osmo in my hand.  With all the people passing by, I had to move my arms up and down, and keep changing directions of the camera, however notice how smooth the movements are even while I am walking because of the DJI Osmo Mobile 2.

I cannot say exactly how the battery life is because after my first full charge, and about 4 or 5 long recordings, I still haven't drained the battery yet, so the battery life looks pretty good so far.  The website says 15 hours.  So far I don't have any issues with the Osmo Mobile 2, except for 1 thing which isn't really the Osmo's fault.  As you can see in the Wynn walk through video, you can see part of the Osmo on the right side.  I can't really blame DJI for this issue because it is due to the wide field of view on the Galaxy S9.  This problem is not there when I have my iPhone XS connected to the Osmo.  Unfortunately the same issue is there when I connect my Galaxy S7.  I don't have a S9 Plus to test this out with, but so far it looks like Samsungs will have this issue.  This is not good because I like the video recording on Samsungs a lot more than iPhones.  Other than that, the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is a 5 out of 5!
